Arctic Mining Geopolitics: Opportunities and Challenges for Nunavik Communities - Michel Jebrak P.Geo, Emeritus Professor, Université du Québec à Montréal | ᐅᑭᐅᕐᑕᑐᒥ ᐅᔭᕋᓐᓂᐊᓂᕐᒨᓕᖓᔪᑦ ᓄᓇᓕᕆᒍᓰᑦ: ᐱᕕᑦᓴᖃᕐᕕᐅᒍᓐᓇᑐᑦ ᓵᖕᖓᒐᓱᐊᕐᑕᐅᒋᐊᓖᓪᓗ ᓄᓇᕕᐅᑉ ᓄᓇᓕᖏᓐᓄᑦ - ᒥᓯᐊᓪ ᔨᐸᕋᒃ, ᐃᓕᓐᓂᐊᑎᑦᓯᔨᒻᒪ
Wednesday May 20, 2026 9:30am - 10:45am EDT
Arctic geopolitics has become a central issue involving three levels of analysis. On a global scale, rivalries between Russia, the United States, and China are turning Inuit territory into a strategic chessboard, prompting communities in Nunavik to assert their legitimacy. At the continental level, the effects of climate change are bringing the populations of Greenland and Canada closer together, both economically and environmentally. In northern Quebec, the northward expansion of the extractive frontier raises questions about sustainable mining models and territorial governance. The communities of Nunavik are precisely the intersection of these three scales: guardians of a territory coveted on a global scale, the first witnesses to climate disruptions, and key players in a political negotiation whose terms remain to be defined.

Wednesday May 20, 2026 11:15am - 11:45am EDT
Drawing on practical experience in remote mining environments, this presentation offers a clear-eyed perspective on the evolution of environmental practices and requirements in northern contexts.
What have we learned? Which approaches have proven most effective? Where do the main risks lie when working on complex, remote sites with limited work windows and high logistical costs?
We will present pragmatic strategies tailored to the realities of isolated sites, while emphasizing the central role of partnerships with local communities in project planning and execution — all with the objective of advancing best practices in environmental management and site restoration.

Alamos exploration efforts in Nunavik are focused on the Qiqavik gold property. The property covers 604km2 of prospective green stone belt for gold exploration. The exploration on Qiqavik is in its early days with only 16months spent on the ground since 2016, however early surface discoveries are encouraging. The 2025 work plans to test some of the generated targets with diamond drilling.
