Mr. Jean-Marc Séguin graduated from the University of Montreal with a bachelor’s degree in Geology in 1994 and with a Master’s degree in structural geology applied to economic resources in 1996. Between 1996 and 2001, he successively worked as field geologist for Falconbridge Ltd., and with Placer Dome Canada in various exploration campaigns. He also has been involved in research projects, among others in Nicaragua, and in geological mapping surveys with the Ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec.
In 2002, he joined the Nunavik Mineral Exploration Fund (NMEF) a non-profit organization promoting the mineral resources of Nunavik and involving the Inuit community in the mineral development. He worked then as the project geologist and, starting January 2006, took the position of the NMEF technical director, managing the organization’s administration and activities such as prospecting trainings all around the Nunavik region, explorations projects and Nunavik mineral potential promotional events.
In September 2013, Mr. Séguin has been appointed as the Mining Coordinator, and later as Mining Development manager, to Makivvik. His duties were mainly to review and analyze wide range of mining files and develop policy recommendations related to the mining development of Nunavik. Furthermore, Mr. Séguin assisted Makivvik departments and representatives on specific negotiations and implementation of Impacts & Benefits Agreements in Nunavik. He also worked at the beginning of his mandate in the development of the "Nunavik Inuit Mining Policy" launched in November 2014 resulting from an extensive consultation with the Nunavik communities.
Mr. Séguin now works as the liaison agent for the Qiniqtiq Landholding Corporation of Kangiqsualujjuaq, coordinating the local Liaison Committee and assisting the community in evaluating the Strange Lake Rare Earth mining project development.
Jean-Marc Séguin is a registered member of the Ordre des Géologues du Québec and of the Association de l’Exploration Minière du Québec.
